Auto drivers to accommodate eight students

Autorickshaw drivers in the city have decided to continue with the current practise of transporting eight students. According to the representatives of the joint action committee of autorickshaw drivers, at a meeting held in the city on Saturday evening, the drivers decided to go ahead and transport eight students to and from schools.

They have also decided to not seat children near the drivers seat or hang school and lunch bags at the sides but only in the rear. According to P.K. Sukumaran, one of the driver-representatives of the committee, drivers affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Labour Progressive Front, All India Trade Union Congress, Marumalarchi Labour Front, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam Launch GDS, Rajinikanth fans association, Indu Makkal Katchi, MMK and others have all decided to abide by the decision.

The drivers also decided to not take more than eight students in the vehicles.

Their decision comes after they had a series of meetings following an apex court order that said that the drivers are permitted to transport not more than five students. And if the students are more than 12 years, the drivers are supposed to transport only three students Autel Maxidiag MD802.

The drivers they were also asked to obtain signatures from parents of the students they transport, and then from the teachers of the school and also the Transport Department officials.

The drivers had opposed the move saying it was not feasible.
